The Standard American Diet

As a society, we’ve moved towards convenience and automation in virtually every aspect of our lives.  This is especially true when it comes to domestic food production.  Corporate profits outweigh public health risks and money dictates the decisions that are made regarding the way our food is produced.  It’s a sad and unfortunate place that we find ourselves in, especially for Americans.  While it’s true that unethical tactics within food production occur outside of the United States, we are the worst offenders and it’s not even close.  As an example, they have banned the use of certain food dyes in various European countries, which has led to manufacturers utilizing natural colors from fruits and vegetables in their products.  While we are recently making massive strides in this regard in America, it has been commonplace to use food dyes with reckless abandon.  Colorful cereals in the UK might be made using natural sources, yet the same brands within the United States use harmful food dyes as a means to cut costs and increase profits.  Your health is not a concern in comparison to their bottom line.  Luckily, this issue has gone mainstream and things appear to be changing in regards to the legality of using these chemicals in our food.

It’s a bit disconcerting when you realize that we are being fed harmful chemicals that are known to cause cancer and other diseases, solely in the name of increased profits.  It positions the individual with a very hard decision going forward in life.  Am I going to continue to consume these foods that are known to contain harmful additives, or am I going to make the decision to go my own way?  The unfortunate reality is that those who make the decision to put their family’s health as a priority are faced with a variety of issues.  Price is a major obstacle, as is convenience in regards to sourcing healthy foods locally.  It can seem like an unsurmountable mountain and I truly get that.  I’ve spent over a decade meticulously analyzing this situation and devising strategies to mitigate the hurdles.

It takes some work, but accessing healthy foods is a realistic option that doesn’t have to increase your monetary expenditure.  One of my main goals with this site is to convince people to leave the grocery store entirely.   I understand this can be a scary hypothetical and something that might seem unrealistic, but this isn’t the case.  It just takes a strategic approach.  I want to provide people with the motivation and tools to buy food from local farms and ranches, grow their own food, and seek natural alternatives to harmful products that are part of the Standard American Diet.  I’ve always thought it was funny that it’s spelled SAD, because that is absolutely what it is.  The Standard American Diet is solely based on a profit model that has no care or consideration for the health impacts of those that are inflicted.
